Greenhow Local History Club

Life on the Hill – A book written by members of the Greenhow Local History Club, all about the history of Greenhow from the earliest times to the present day. This book was published on 15th December 2005 and quickly sold out. A reprint was done in 2010 and the book is once more available. Please visit the book page for details of how to obtain a copy.

We usually meet at 7.00 pm on a Thursday evening, although not every week. Summertime normally sees us out and about visiting various sites of interest. During the winter months we meet indoors once a month at Coldstones Quarry. Also during the wintertime, we are actively working in Gillfield Mine, carrying out preservation and recording. If you want to come and get involved then please contact us first via our contact page.

We are a retired couple researching the paintings of the Cumberland artist Sheila Fell RA (1931-1979). In around 1970 Fell began painting “deserted farmhouses” in Yorkshire, specifically near Pateley Bridge and particularly the Hardcastle area at Greenhow Hill, most probably seen from the main road. For example, we know she painted White Row cottages from the field next to the churchyard; this identification was assisted by an old photograph in your lovely book, Life on the Hill. We also think she painted Viponts Barn and possibly Lily Green Farm. We would like to identify as many buildings as possible and wondered if you have, or know of, any more old photographs of farm buildings in the area, some of which may have been demolished since 1970. We would be extremely grateful for any photographs or other help or suggestions.

I have some photos of Hole Bottom Farm, hole Bottom house, Rigg Top, Coldstream, and unidentified cottage where my great grandfather George Calvert died in Pateley/Greenhow area.
He was buried in Greenhow Hill cemetery, I once say his gravestone many years ago but it was moved, I do know where.
