Those going to America in 1857
Those in the party were:
Thomas Blackah (1826-1895) born at Hardcastle and his wife Miriam Blackah (1830-1908) nee Mackwell, born at Greenhow Hill, together with their children Ellen Matilda (1853-1869) and Arthur Douglas (b.1856).
Duncan Mackwell (brother of Miriam Blackah) born 1828 at Greenhow Hill and his children Joseph born 1851 at Greenhow Hill and Ellen born 1852 at Greenhow Hill. His wife Sarah Mackwell nee Gill born 1831 at Greenhow Hill had died the previous year.
Joseph Gill born 18 Oct 1822 at Greenhow Hill, died 28 Mar 1878 at Greenhow Hill & wife Ann Gill (nee Mackwell – sister of Miriam Blackah) born 20 Jun 1823 at Greenhow Hill & died 23 Dec 1858 at Greenhow Hill. They were married 3 Dec 1845 at Ripon Cathedral
David Storey b.1838 – two possibles
1. David Storey b.1838 Greenhow Hill, d.1921 Pateley Bridge. Married Grace Knowles at Pateley Bridge in 1863.
2. David Storey b.1839 Greenhow Hill, d.1921 Keighley. Married Mary Jane Mackwell at Pateley Bridge in 1860.
Thomas Fielding born 1828 at Greenhow Hill. The age on the passenger list could be a typo as there is no Thomas Fielding b.1818, however there is one born 1828 who was married to Hannah Gill, a sister of Sarah (Gill) Mackwell as above. Hannah died in 1850 and Thomas remained a widower for at least the next 30 years.
John Storey b.1828 (not yet identified)
Thomas Blackah and family (and presumably the rest of the party) returned home when they found that they had been lied to by the emigration agent. I always assumed that they were in Canada for a few years, but as Ann Gill died at Greenhow Hill in December the following year (1858) they must have returned sooner.
